Where, Why, What” Series #4: The “Where”, Back to the Future

“Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life - think of it, dream of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success.”

- Swami Vivekananda

The goal of my last blog post was to drive home the importance of having an “end game”, a destination, you're “where”. You may still be wondering what the big fuss is about for having and keeping your end game in mind. Let’s talk a little bit about the brain.

In life, we tend to move and make our decisions based on our life experiences. Insert, duh, right there. I know that was super basic, but hear me out first. What exactly is, an experience? In general, experience is something you gain over time. So one could say, your life experience is your life over time. You’re essentially moving through life, based on a culmination of past thoughts, circumstances, events, the ups, and downs. All of that make up your life experience. How then do you break out of your current cycles or situations when your brain is literally programmed to move off of memory? Specifically the memories of your life experiences over time? Welp, I’m glad you asked. The goal is to create a memory of what you want for yourself. You may have heard someone say something like, envision what you would like or picture it. All that simply means is, create a memory. How do we create that memory? You do it with your end game. Remember the quote at the beginning of this blog? When you focus on your end game, keeping that picture in mind, your brain literally builds pathways or synapses and creates new memories of your future. Freaky huh?!

Once those connections are made, your brain will start to notice the things you’ve been focusing on and will start pointing you in the direction necessary to meet your goals. You just kicked your reticular activating system (RAS) in motion. The goal here is to move based on the pictures that you have in mind not based on what you see in life. That can be tricky but it can absolutely be achieved.

Your brain, via evolutionary traits, isn’t designed to make you happy. It’s designed to keep you safe. The moment you decide to get out of your comfort zone, unless you’ve reprogrammed your thought process otherwise, your brain will automatically default to certain triggers designed to keep you safe. Why? Because comfort is safe. Unfortunately, the level of success that you’re looking for won’t be found in safety. For that success, you my friend must take the leap. Rest assured, you’re not alone in this journey.

Next week, we’ll get into the brain hacks I’ve used on my personal journeys to success and help kick start your journey too.

Until next week. I look forward to jumping back into the “Where” of things with you.
