“Alice: Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?
The Cheshire Cat: That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.
Alice: I don't much care where.
The Cheshire Cat: Then it doesn't much matter which way you go.
Alice: ...So long as I get somewhere.
The Cheshire Cat: Oh, you're sure to do that, if only you walk long enough.”
- Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland
I’ve referenced quotes from the Cheshire Cat more than a few times over the years. One, because I had a Civics Teacher in Jr. High that would tell me every time I smiled, I looked like I was up to something, much like the cat from Alice in Wonderland. Second, because in such a nonchalant manner, the Cheshire Cat unfolds a lesson to Alice that’s often hidden in plain sight every single day. That lesson is, the key to getting to where you want to go is knowing where you want to go. The moment you have your end in mind, the starting point becomes abundantly clear. Whenever I have a conversation about goals and goal setting, an old Boost Mobile commercial pops into my head. The individual hits the walkie-talkie button on the side of the cell phone, it chirps (brrrt), and then you hear the question, “where you at?!” That individual is wanting to know the location of the friend so they can determine how to get to their friend. Let me say it another way. Your daily actions dictate the direction of your life. End results are a byproduct of the actions that you take daily. Have I been redundant enough?
You can generally determine where a person is heading in life by their daily routine. By “where” they are in their daily routines. Your daily actions are the physical equivalent to dressing for where you want to be, not for where you are currently. We’ve all heard things similar to dress for success and dress for where you’re going, not where you are. My friend, I submit you, actions have a dress code as well. Every overnight success that you’ve ever heard of followed that dress code, day in and day out, until their destination manifested their destiny.
I can’t speak enough about the importance of the end game, your end game. The end game is the starting point. Whenever you plan a vacation or a trip, by default, you decide where you’re going before you plan when and how you’ll get there. The clothes that you have on right now were determined based on where you were going today. That’s true even if you’ve decided to go nowhere.
Now that we’ve gotten the importance of our end game down, in subsequent blog posts, we’ll get into the science of the end game. We’ll also get into the esoteric implications of the end game. So buckle up my friend, we're going to take this conversation to the next level.
Until next week. I look forward to jumping back into the “Where” of things with you.
